Salters Builds his Reputation

Sophomore Evan Salters is a star pupil, balancing out his gymnastics and business school efforts. He is our current gymnast of the month and is developing the skills he needs to do well in International Business.

I recently interviewed sophomore Evan Salters about his field of study, financial planning. We spoke about the opportunities he has found and a few challenges as well.

Evan Salters was accepted into the Fox Fund club at Temple University. The Fox Fund is a selective valuation investment club on the Temple campus which examines and studies how to invest in valuable stocks. This club meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4-5pm. The obstacle that Evan faces with his new involvement with the club, is that it cuts into an hour of practice on the days that they meet. However, the club provides him with valuable experience in his major and exposes Evan to many of the details and issues that he may face as he explores his future in this field. Evan is excited for the learning opportunities and looks forward to being involved with the people in the club.

As Evan looks for practical experience in his field, he has explored the potential to work and interview with financial firms for an intern position. He was contacted by one firm, however the internship, unfortunately was located in Columbia, Maryland. When asked how the company found Evan, he responded by saying they may have “found him on one of the Temple career sites.” I continued talking to Evan, asking what his dream job and work environment would be. He said he is looking for, “a smaller company with a friendly environment”. Evan applied for a position with Creative Financial Group in Newtown Square.

Through research, he has uncovered Mass Mutual in Washington, D.C. which has attractive qualities. Evan has looked both in the Philadelphia and Washington D.C. area for internship and job opportunities. He says, “I looked in the D.C. area because I could live at home (northern Virginia) and it would be an easy commute.”

Through Evan’s focus on his education, persistence in getting valuable field experience, and hard work in the gym, he has shown he is one of the most well-rounded gymnasts on the team.

Information about the author: Sam Klein is a junior at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and trains at the Montgomery County Gymnastics Center in Harleysville, PA. He was a recent silver medalist at the Maccabiah Games in Israel and has recently joined the TUMG family as an intern.
