A Reunion of the Ages

Alumni

We had a fine celebration of Fred's 41 years as head coach of Temple U Men's Gymnastics when many alumni and friends met a the Hilton Philadelphia City Avenue on Oct 28. Nearly 200 joined together to enjoy each other's company, participate in a fund-raiser for both TUMG and Philadelphia Boys' Gymnastics, which Fred started at TU in 2003 and now continues to run in Germantown and provides training for 50+ boys ages 5-16. The evening began with a cocktail reception and folks had a chance to see several tables of memorabilia, photos and awards.

Once everyone was seated in the dining area, we heard a few words from MC Bill Roth and PBG rep Augie DeLuca, during which photos and videos of both TUMG and PBG showed in the background. As the banquet began, a live auction was held featuring a land trip to Africa, a week at a condo in Vail, CO, an afternoon of sailing and BBQ with Fred and Diane at their NJ shore house, a TUMG flag signed by all TUMG attendees and a scholarship program for disadvantaged PBG boys. During the meal, a video of Fred's All-Americans showed on the large screen plus a slide show of all the teams with which Fred has been associated.

As the meal ended, Tom Gibbs began the roast, bringing up many anecdotes from their 52 year friendship. One of Fred's junior high school teammates, Wayne Barnes, spoke on their history, letting folks know about Fred's first days in gymnastics. A variety of others then took the podium to relate stories, bringing smiles to everyone. At the end of the evening, a group photo was taken with all former TUMG members - from 1949 through the present. Of course, the reunions continued in the hotel bar and rooms. What a nice night of reminiscing and getting reacquainted with former teammates! Thank you to all who attended the evening. We appreciate your presence and support.
